Smallville S4 E6 – Transference

Smallville S4 E6 – Transference

Welcome to the Smallville rewatch! We’re diving into Season 4, Episode 6, titled “Transference.” Grab some popcorn and maybe a body-swap insurance policy, because things are about to get weird in the best way possible. That’s right, it’s Freaky Friday in Smallville.

Episode Preview

In this week’s installment of Smallville, Lionel Luthor is literally “dying” to get out of prison. When a mysterious Kryptonian stone causes a accidental “Freaky Friday” situation at the penitentiary, Clark Kent finds himself trapped behind bars in the body of his worst enemy. Meanwhile, Lionel is suddenly back in the game, rocking Clark’s flannel shirts and discovering that being a farm boy comes with some seriously “super” perks.

Trapped in a failing body with a death sentence, Clark has to convince a skeptical Martha and Jonathan that he’s their son before Lionel ruins his reputation, and his life… forever. It’s a race against time, a prison riot, and a masterclass in acting as the ultimate Luthor-Kent mashup takes center stage.

Episode Review

Starring: Tom Welling (Clark Kent), John Glover (Lionel Luthor), Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang), Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor), Allison Mack (Chloe Sullivan), John Schneider (Jonathan Kent), and Annette O’Toole (Martha Kent).

Freak of the Week: Edgar Cole (played by J.P. Manoux). While Edgar isn’t your typical meteor-infected villain, he’s the “freak” in the room because he’s a brilliant, slightly unhinged inmate who helps Lionel figure out the body-swapping mechanics of the Water Stone. You might recognize Manoux, he’s one of those “hey, it’s that guy!” actors who’s been in everything from Phil of the Future to Community. He plays the jittery, nervous genius perfectly here.

Special Effects: The standout effect in this episode isn’t a CGI explosion, but rather the “spiritual” swap visual. The way the souls swirl between Clark and Lionel looks great for 2004 TV. However, let’s be real: the best “effect” in the episode is John Glover’s hair and Tom Welling’s acting. Welling has to play Lionel playing Clark, and watching him try to act “cool and menacing” while wearing a barn jacket is a special effect all its own. The prison riot scene also uses some gritty, handheld camera work that makes the action feel way more intense than the usual Smallville high school hallway drama.

Music:

This episode features one of the most iconic “needle drops” in the series.

  • “Pain” by Jimmy Eat World – This plays during the climactic prison riot/body swap reversal. It’s the perfect high-energy, early-2000s anthem to underscore the chaos.
  • “Better Off By Myself” by Bosshouse
  • “California” by Hawk Nelson

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

(5 out of 5 stars. This is widely considered one of the best episodes of the entire series. It’s a total game-changer for the plot and features the best acting we’ve seen from the leads yet.)

Complete Synopsis & Plot Breakdown

The episode kicks off with Clark hearing a high-pitched ringing that leads him straight to the prison where Lionel Luthor is serving time. Lionel is dying of a terminal liver disease and is desperate. He’s been experimenting with a mysterious stone (the Water Stone) and tries to use it to swap bodies with Lex during a visit. Clark, being the hero he is, rushes in to stop the struggle, grabs the stone, and he and Lionel switch places.

Suddenly, Lionel is in Clark’s healthy, super-powered body, and Clark is stuck in a prison cell in a body that’s literally failing. Lionel-as-Clark heads back to the Kent farm, and it is hilarious and creepy. He tries to hit on Martha (ew), quits the football team because he doesn’t care about “sportsmanship,” and treats Chloe like a total jerk. He even tries to access LuthorCorp accounts but realizes Lex has locked him out.

Back in prison, Clark-as-Lionel is having a rough time. He’s being bullied by inmates and has no powers. He eventually teams up with Edgar Cole, who reveals that the swap isn’t permanent unless they use the stone again during a specific window. Clark manages to reach Martha, and through a series of “only my son would know this” moments, he convinces her of the truth.

The climax happens during a prison riot. Lionel (in Clark’s body) arrives to make the switch permanent with Lex, but Clark (in Lionel’s body) intercepts him. In a brutal brawl set to Jimmy Eat World’s “Pain,” the stone is activated, and they swap back. The twist? Being inhabited by Clark’s “pure” soul actually cured Lionel’s terminal liver disease, giving the Magnificent Bastard a literal second lease on life.

Lessons and the Road to Superman

The Lesson: This episode is a massive lesson in empathy and identity. Clark has to learn how to navigate the world without his “crutch” (his powers). He survives the prison riot using his heart and his brain, proving that he is a hero even when he isn’t “Super.”

The Road to Superman: This is a pivotal moment for Clark’s development. He sees firsthand how dangerous his powers can be in the wrong hands. It reinforces his need for a “moral compass” and shows him that being the Man of Steel is about the man, not the steel. Additionally, this episode sets up the “Redeemed Lionel” arc. By curing Lionel, Clark accidentally creates a new kind of ally (and a new kind of threat), moving the pieces into place for the epic cosmic battles involving the Stones of Power.

Review Notes

This is some amazing acting especially from Tom Welling discovering Clarks powers, flirting with mom, etc.

LOL he got horny with mom and his eyes went off lol

Now hitting on Chloe… ick

Now we got witch stuff happening with coach and Lana, this season is weird.

Now kissing on Lana… WTF this episode is creepy AF

OK great fight scene in riot left wondering doesn’t Lionel know Clarks secret now?

AND now he is cured!… oh he has no recollection how convenient.

Holy crap the girls are pissed at him.

OK who does the cellmate become?? Holy guest stars much Margot Kidder is back and picking him up from the prison… weird since it was Lex who got him out confusing.

Next episode Jinx…. sounds like more magic… surely they wont go Mxy they havent gotten that far out yet, but its the only magic character I can think of.

This season sure does seem to have a lot of magic, makes sense since its Supes only real weakness.
